Junior Year. I had a car, a solid group of friends, and plans every single weekend. And I looked like this (but less blurry):

These were the songs we were listening to as we drove:
Blink 182 – All the Small Things (this video still cracks me up)

Sisqo – The Thong Song (jeez. really?)

Bye Bye Bye – NSYNC (my love for this boy band had not faltered)

10th grade. 1998-1999. It was the year of firsts: my first job, my first boyfriend, my first car. But I still hadn’t gotten my hair under control:

Goo Goo Dolls – Slide

This is still my favorite Goo Goo Dolls song. When I hear it, I am instantly back in the fall of 1998.

TLC – No Scrubs

This one reminds me of my first job working at a 50s-style ice cream parlor. We listened to oldies when we were open, but come cleaning time, the poodle skirts came off and the dance party started.

LFO – Summer Girls

Admit it, you liked this one, too. And girls that wear Abercrombie & Fitch.

9th grade. 1997-1998. For my friends and me, it was the last year before boys and drama started taking over our lives. And we spent most of it listening to boybands. I looked like this:

(This was – clearly – the year when my hair really started to get out of control. It wasn’t until mid-way through my senior year that I discovered the miracle that is the flatiron. I promise, I don’t leave the house like this anymore.).

NSYNC was the favorite of the year:

NSYNC – I Want You Back

But I also listened to a few other things. Like:

Usher – You Make Me Wanna

Tonic – If You Could Only See

The always awesome Ginger at GReads! has given us a very fun topic for July’s Tune in Tuesday:

My Teen Years Special Edition: What were you listening to when you were a teenager? We all come from different decades, with different tunes. For this month, please pick some of your favorite songs that bring you back to those glorious teenage years!

Since July has 5 Tuesdays, I thought I would take you on a little tour of my musical life from 8th grade through 12th grade. That was 1996-2001 for me. It was a time of boy bands, pop punk, and mainstream rap. It was an error where we didn’t just listen to one genre of music. And we didn’t always have very good taste. In fact, what you will see over the next month is slightly embarrassing. So you better enjoy it.

8th grade. 1996-1997. We were just getting AOL (via the cds in the mail). We were coming out of the grunge era into some weird 70s-esque fashion period with flared jeans and shiny shirts. And I looked like this:

So what was I listening to?

No Doubt – Don’t Speak

No Doubt (w/ Weezer) was my first concert. My friend Nicole (who I am still very much friends with) and I attended with our moms. Pretty sure it was at the Silverdome. I also have fond memories of listening to this on my discman on the way to Chicago.

Ben Folds Five – Brick

I was 14. And a pretty innocent 14. So there is a chance I did not realize what this song was really about right away.

Freshman – The Verve Pipe

I wasn’t quite a Freshman, but I was almost there. This was probably the biggest song that year at my school. Years later, in college, I went to a Verpe Pipe concert at a roller skating rink in Taylor, MI. But we were there for the opening band (Bliss 66) and left before they took the stage. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

So what were you listening to in 8th grade?
