Barchester Towers

Barchester Towers (Penguin Classics)

I finished Barchester Towers by Anthony Trollope today.  I really enjoyed it.  It started out slow, but once the story got going (and the detailed character descriptions stopped) it was actually very good.  The writing is very witty and clever.  It is a story of church politics, love, and misunderstandings.  At times it reminded me of Dickens, at other times Thackery, and sometimes even our favorite, Jane Austen.  I had never heard of the book before it was assigned to me, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes smart, clever 19th century novels.
