Books – January 2009

January Books Read

My goal was to read 4 books per month and I only managed 3 in January.  But, I that’s an average so I can make it up.  I blame the week that I was away.

Books Read

  • A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard by JK Rowling
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling  (re-read)

January Books Acquired

I did, however, go a little overboard on new books this month.  All of these are from Swaptree except War and Peace so they only cost me shipping and and unwanted item which helps me justify it.  But I’m thinking about a February moratorium on new books.

Books Acquired

  • The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedmant
  • The Virgin’s Lover by Philippa Gregory
  • Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
  • Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
  • War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
  • The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith
  • The Big Over Easy by Jasper Fforde
  • A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking
  • Fermat’s Enigma by Simon Singh
  • Dateline: Toronto by Ernest Hemingway
  • Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
  • Magical Thinking by Augusten Burroughs
  • The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields
  • The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
  • Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende
  • Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks

So, are you open for comments?I read The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and thought it was sweet and interesting. I enjoyed the dialogue … the patois as they spoke.I own the Stephen Hawking and poke around in it occasionally. I only read part of one of Jasper Fforde's books. I just didn't "get it", lolI liked Brideshead Revisited, I think mostly because I truly hated every single character in it.The Stone Diaries was a great hit at my f2f book club. Some loved it & some hated it. It had plenty of literary aspects to discuss.Daughter of Fortune is the only Allende book I've read and I've always meant to read more by her. Don't know why I haven't.Year of Wonders is my bookclub choice for April. I pretty much chose it on a whim (liked the idea of the plague) I hope it's good.Interesting group of books you've got there.

Thanks for your comments. 🙂 You should give the Jasper Fforde books a second chance. I didn't love The Eyre Affair when I first read it, but now I really like the Thursday Next series.I'm hoping Year of Wonders is as good as her other books. I loved March and People of the Book was pretty good, too.
