The Awakening by Kate Chopin

The Awakening

I finished The Awakening by Kate Chopin this weekend.  I loved it.  Mrs. Pontelier made me feel the way that Anna Karenina or Esther from The Bell Jar made me feel, as well as reminding me of different times in my own life.  It’s a sad book, ahead of its time in feminism but sadder still for the way it had to end in 1899.  At least now women have more options when they feel smothered by their lives as wives and mothers.

I really can’t quite explain why this book touched me so much without admiting to certain feelings that I have had or explaining particular periods of my own life – something I’m not quite prepared to do here.  But, I think that any woman would be able to relate to this book and I think it should be read.

I am now in the middle of A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel and loving it.
