During the course of our marriage, Ben and I have often been forced to live in different parts of the country. In 2007, I spent 12 weeks in San Francisco. By the time I returned to Michigan, Ben had permanently moved to Florida. I was unable to join him until I graduated from law school the following May which meant we spent an entire year living on our own.
Tomorrow, Ben is leaving for grad school in Asheville for six weeks (and you can follow his adventures at his new blog). While six weeks honestly seems like nothing to us, I am sad to see him go. But our previous times apart, I have been able to read A LOT. So that is my silver lining.
I’ve seen some people create summer reading lists and I have done so in the past. I don’t want to do that this year because as soon as I put a book on a list, I no longer desire to read it. But I do have some thoughts on what I’d like to read.
I’m contemplating a Harry Potter reread. It feels like time and Harry Potter is always a summer series to me. I’ve also been thinking of finishing the Betsy-Tacy books and maybe getting started on David Copperfield (which was the classic chunkster I chose for this year). Other than that, I just want to read what grabs me.

Funny that you said that. I love making the list but I don’t enjoy following it so much. Seems like a bit of work afterward and it’s supposed to be fun!

Jim and I were used to spending weeks and weeks apart too. Hopefully, this trend will soon end for you and you can spend your summers together again. Good luck over the next few weeks!

Well…. I am always up for a Harry Potter re-read so you have my vote on that one. 🙂 I made a summer read list last year and I dont think I read any of them so go list free!

On the plus side, you have Gatsby and Daisy with you. I don’t think I could manage 6 weeks without Daniel, the most we’ve gone was 2 weeks and I stayed with my parents. I didn’t want to be alone. haha I’m sure it’ll go by quickly and before you know it, he’ll be back home.
I agree about the list thing. It does happen, and soon as I put it on a list. I don’t want to read it anymore. It feels like a chore.

It is quite a difficult thing to be apart for so many weeks. Hope you and Ben catch up often on Twitter and Facebook and on the phone and on Skype.
I agree with you on summer reading lists (and on reading lists in general). I made some kind of a reading list at the beginning of the year and it feels like hard work now and so I have totally ignored the list and am reading what my heart wants to – in that spontaneous, unplanned way.
Ben’s blog looks cool! Interesting to know that he is a soccer fan! Do you also like soccer? Which team(s) are you supporting? It looks like the American team has made a good start 🙂 Do ask Ben to write about books too, on his blog. It will be interesting to compare your reading list with his.

“…as soon as I put a book on a list, I no longer desire to read it.” The same thing happens to me! I do add them to my Goodreads, though, so that I can remember what has interested me in the past, but I make myself just pick up the book that seems the most interesting at the moment.

I’m also throwing in my vote for a Harry Potter reread. Although I usually associate the series with winter reading, I’ve started rereading them this summer and can safely say that they work well for summer reading as well 🙂
