The Sunday Salon [2.13.10]

The Sunday Salon.com
Happy Sunday, everyone. We are having a quiet weekend over here. Ben isn’t feeling too great so there is a lot of reading and tv-watching going on in our house.

On Friday night, I started and finished Lisa Schroeder’s new book, The Day Before, which comes out in June. Since you have to wait until then to read my review, I just wanted to tell you now that I loved it. Schroeder is so talented at what she does: writing YA novels in verse. I know the style won’t be for everyone but I encourage you all to give her books a shot.

Yesterday we reorganized and rearranged the guest room. It looks so pretty that I kind of want to hang out in there. I am getting very excited for my first guests of the season in a couple weeks. One of the perks of living in Florida is that you get to entertain your friends and family from up north when they need to thaw out for a few days.

Other than that I’ve just been relaxing. I went for a 4 mile run yesterday and it is my farthest distance yet but I kind of feel like I’m cheating when I say that because my training program has me walk part of my runs. I may have to deviate from this when it gets closer to race day.

Don’t you just love commitment-free weekends? Let me leave you with what I am reading right now (and yes, I am actually reading Great House this time):

Oh, I love fixing up special rooms! I don’t actually have a guest room, now that I’ve downsized. I used to have a guest house at my last home, but everything about that place was such high-maintenance, that I’m happy to be in a smaller home.

Guests now stay on the hideabed sofa in my office…LOL

But there are lots of books in there…my stacks have taken over that space, as well as my own bedroom.

I hope you like Egan’s book. It wasn’t one of my favorites of hers, but there are many who loved it.

I don’t like books in the “verse” style. Ellen Hopkins’ books are like that (Identical, Crank), but it’s possible to get into them after a bit.

Hope you enjoy your upcoming guests.

My guest room is also an office. Apartment living lends itself well to double duty rooms.

Totally! Downsizing has a number of advantages, like fewer rooms to clean, too.

I really want to read Visit from the Goon Squad. The cover scared me off for a long time, then I heard what it was actually about and now I want to read it! Hope you enjoy it.

‘The Day Before’ looks like a wonderful book, Michelle! I will look for it when it comes out. I haven’t read any novels in verse, but I have one on my bookshelf that I want to read – Vikram Seth’s ‘The Golden Gate’.

I checked out the race site for which you had given the link. The photo there was breathtaking! Is that where you are going to run? Awesome! Are you planning to run the 5K race or the halfathon? Wish you all the very best! We will be cheering you 🙂

    Hope Ben gets well soon.

Good luck with Great House. It was sort of hard for me to get through and I sort of wondered why it is considered to be so great, but it definitely made me think and left me pondering things.
