The Sunday Salon [8.12.12]

The Sunday Salon.comAnd so begins my last week home with the baby. I am not ready. But Ben goes back to school tomorrow and perhaps a week of staying home with Evan by myself will help me get ready for work. It’s just been so nice with all three of us home all summer – I could do this forever. You know, if someone paid me.

As Evan is becoming more aware of his surroundings, we’ve noticed him noticing the television. So, in keeping with the no-screen-time-until-age-two advice, we’ve implemented a no-tv-while-the-baby-is-awake rule. And so far it is AMAZING. Our house is so peaceful and relaxing and if we get a few minutes to ourselves we actually spend it reading. And when the baby is awake, we’re interacting with him. We still watch an episode or two of something on Netflix before going to bed (just finished up How I Met Your Mother, now starting with Frasier), and we’re actually considering dropping cable altogether. Anyone done it and recommend it?

As for reading, I am currently working my way through Tolstoy and the Purple Chair, The Kill Zone (the Maze Runner prequel), and A Land More Kind than Home. Hoping to start Fallen in Love (Fallen series) and Gone Girl this week. What are you reading?

I haven’t had cable in years, and I don’t miss it a bit. When I had cable, I wasted a lot of time watching stuff I didn’t actively love just because it was there. The only downside to not having cable is being behind on the big TV shows, but I haven’t minded it much.

Ah, going back to work with an infant. It is tough, but I also found it refreshing to be around adults again. But it certainly made me appreciate my time with my daughter even more when I was home!

I dropped cable for the last year I lived by myself and I never missed it. I mostly watched netflix and any new shows that I wanted to watch I just used Hulu. I recommend it!

Not a TV person myself (although I have enjoyed the Olympics) and probably would drop cable if it weren’t for my husband’s need for his soccer fix. We prefer our movies. Everyone handles the going-back-to-work thing differently, but it freaking leveled me. At least for awhile. And my mom was taking care of the baby! Still. It is hard when they’ve been sort of attached to you for so long. Good luck in the upcoming weeks!

I haven’t had cable in nearly a decade, and I truly don’t miss it (or the bill). Last year I discovered Hulu, so I do watch more television than I used to, but I’m ok with that.

Enjoy your last week home. I can’t imagine, but at least you were able to take off that much time to begin with. What a special time!

Good luck with going back to work, Michelle. Hope you’ll find a balance that works for you all 🙂
I prefer streaming the tv shows I follow and noticed last week that my books started covering the tv 😀 Maybe you could do a try-out month w/o watching cable first.

Enjoy your last week before becoming a working mommy! You know we got rid of cable last year and didn’t miss it a bit. We used a digital antenna to get the main four channels and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Since moving, our digital antenna isn’t strong enough to pick up any signals, so we opted for cable. The kids have become zombies and we can’t get them away from the tv now. It was nice while it lasted.

Both of my kids have discovered playlists on Spotify so the TV is not on all that often anymore. Instead, they spend time building their playlists and listening to music while reading or hanging out. My son (14) is a huge Sinatra fan so we have Sinatra and Ella and Harry Connick Jr. floating through the house. Very relaxing. I listened to it with one ear while finishing Gone Girl last night.

I gave up cable and television about 6 months ago, and I don’t miss it one bit. If there is something that I want to watch, I can watch online, and there is a lot more peace in my home without all the background television noise. I’m sorry that you have to go back to work so soon though. It is hard, I remember how hard it was for the mother of the child that I watched in my home to go back only 6 weeks after the baby had been born. Be well, and peaceful during this hard time. I will be thinking about you.
