I Joined a Book Club and Actually Read the Books!

A few months ago I joined a book club that one of my young lawyers friends started. I haven’t said much about it because I wasn’t sure it would stick. But when I met these girls and they brought food that was labeled as Vegetarian, Vegan, or Gluten-Free, I knew I had found my people.

In October, we went with spooky reads. We read We Have Always Lived in the Castle, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and The Mist. Well, they read The Mist. I didn’t quite make it to that one (which keeps me a Stephen King virgin).

I’ve read We Have Always Lived in the Castle before. I read it in print last time, so I opted for audio this time. I may have enjoyed it even more this time. It’s so deliciously creepy.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was much less creepy. In fact, it was more of a comedy than a thriller. It was somewhat entertaining but nothing I would highly recommend.

In December, we are discussing Every Day by David Levithan (which I already finished and really liked). I am so happy I found a book club that I am actually enjoying.

I was in three at one point, but I guess what I have learned is that these book clubs have a delicate balance. One club was a long-distance Skype one, and we just couldn’t get everyone on a suitable schedule. Another one, which is very literary and mentally invigorating, was run by a control freak and a male chauvinist. So, you know, I don’t have time for that shit. So now I am back to one. I’m glad you found one to fit your schedule and your lifestyle!

I am so glad that you found a club that works for you, and I am glad that they are picking intelligent reads. It sounds like this is a group that you can really gel with and that you guys will have some interesting conversations with them. Enjoy it!!

That’s so fantastic you found a book club that you like. I haven’t had a good one for at least five years. There are a few out there, but they don’t read the types of books that I’m interested in. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is fantastic, isn’t it?!

That’s so exciting! It’s such a great feeling when you find a book club that fits. I’ve been going to mine for over a year, and not everyone always reads the book and we don’t always talk about the book in question for the full time. But our get togethers are always filled with lots of bookish chatter (and food and drinks) and I love it 🙂
