My Thoughts:
This was not exactly the book I thought it was going to be. At times I enjoyed the strange story and luscious, detailed writing. And other times I just couldn’t wait for the book to be over. I think the inconsistent pacing (100 pages on a few years and then 10 pages on a century) is what didn’t work for me. I was apparently in the mood for action and I was getting description.
This was a case of not finding the right book at the right time for me. It was not a massive Russian tome. But it often felt like one. I actually started this book with the intention of reviewing it near its pub date, but it took me nearly a month to work my way through it.
This is unlike anything I’ve read before and Sidorova certainly deserves some praise for tackling such a massive undertaking. Just be prepared to invest some time and energy in this one.
