A Great and Terrible Beauty

A Great and Terrible Beauty (Readers Circle)

I finished A Great and Terrible Beauty last night and I loved it!  It took me awhile to get into it.  I was about halfway through before I really started to care about the characters and story.  The characters were very distinct and relatable.  They all struggled with the same problem – being a young woman in Victorian England – and responded in different ways.  It made me appreciate all that has changed since then and the choices that I have now.  Despite the magic, I thought that it was a very honest book about the views and thoughts of the time.  Toward the end, when the plot started to speed up and Gemma discovers all of the secrets of Mary and Sarah and her mother, I was able to figure out just enough.  It wasn’t blatantly predictable, but it didn’t come out of nowhere.  I enjoyed figuring it all out with Gemma.  I’m curious to see what happens in Rebel Angels – I may have to go out and get it soon.

I am going to read Cat’s Cradle next.  I’m also going to start Reading Lolita in Tehran for the book club and I think it is just about time to start my Harry Potter re-read before July.
