I finished The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri yesterday. I read it pretty quickly in anticipation of seeing the movie last night (I was literally sitting on the couch at my friend’s house an hour before the show trying to finish the book). We walked down to the theater, waited in line, and when we were the next people to be helped, they announced the show was sold out. But it’s at the Michigan Theater all week, so I’m going to go on Monday instead.
I enjoyed the book very much. It is yet another book containing themes of identity issues. Maybe I’m drawn to them because I’ve struggled with this as well. I think she is a very talented writer. The book takes place over a rather long time period, but I felt like I had enough of each part of Gogol’s life to really know him and his family. It was beautifully written. It was sad and happy in its own way – like life – so it felt real.
