The Sunday Salon: Exhaustion

Oh, readers. I’m in a bit of a funk. Lately, I haven’t felt like reading. Ever. Or blogging. Or doing much of anything besides watching old episodes of Bones and Gilmore Girls. I have spent more time in bed watching tv the last two weeks than I have in ages. Emily from Books, the Universe, & Everything has aptly named my funk (and apparently hers as well): Exhaustion.

I am exhausted. Just physically and mentally drained. Last week I blamed this exhaustion on my insane weekend trip to Michigan. Now, I’m not sure if it’s the fact that Ben is gone, or the depressing weather (oppressively hot followed by nonstop rain), or something else. But when I get home from work, reading is the last thing I want to be doing. I can get a chapter or two in before I grow restless and move on to something else.

I’m looking for that one thing that will take me out of this exhaustion and ease my restlessness. The perfect book, a good discussion with a friend, a fantastic yoga class. On Friday, I am heading up to North Carolina to spend a long weekend with Ben. I have high hopes that this trip is that One Thing. But that still leaves me with five more days of this funk.

So readers, please excuse me if I seem a little lackluster lately. I promise I will be back in full force soon.

How do you all get out of funks like this?

Like I told you earlier this week, what worked for me was to basically forbid myself from reading and just do tv and mindless, repetitive computer games. After a week of that I was ready for books again.

Everyone gets these phases! And I have spent my fair share of days in front of the tv as well. Youยดll probably soon miss reading and devour tons of books ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope you have a great weekend with Ben! ๐Ÿ™‚

There are three ways that I get out of a funk: I stop reading for awhile, read only picture books, or reread favorite books. It sounds like that your funk is really back so I’ll suggest just not reading at all for awhile. Good luck.

I usually get a couple of really bad funks a year. Usually what I do is give myself permission to not read for a week and spend my time watching TV or movies and reading magazines. Usually after a few days, I will be good to go again. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am so sorry you are in a funk. It sounds like a life-funk and not just a reading funk. Rent a movie that you know will make you cry. That and chocolate. Hope your trip to NC helps!

You definitely can’t make yourself read or you won’t get out of the funk and then you’ll be mad at reading, lol! Maybe you just need to mix it up a little by not reading at all for a little bit and focusing on other things. And don’t feel guilty for it at all!

Poor thing. When I’ve been in a reading funk before the best thing is not to make yourself read before you feel like it. There’s no point in reading if you don’t feel like it and then when you do again you’ll enjoy it all the more.
I’ve been a bit slow with reading the past week and a half too, I want to read but every time I pick up a book I start to fall asleep.

I’m sorry to hear you are in a funk. I think that the best way to deal is just do what you want to do. From my experience reading because you feel you have to doesn’t work and you’ll only end up disliking it or the books you read.

Sorry to know that you are in a funk. Hope you are enjoying watching TV and movies. Whenever I am in a funk, I have a marathon movie session, and it always changes my mood and makes me feel better.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend with Ben! I saw some pictures in Ben’s blog and North Carolina looks really beautiful! Hope both of you have a wonderful time!

I went through a phase of not reading and also watched episodes of Bones. I got through every episode on Netflix before I picked up my book again. That show is addicting. But when I finished season five I read two books in three days. I think it happens to everyone ๐Ÿ™‚
